The Madison Mini! It’s Coming!

It’s race week! Race week for the Madison Mini Marathon, a local favorite of mine. I remember my first year doing it I had my heart set on finishing in 2:15, which was a fast PR for me in 2010. For the following years after that I trained and aimed for a PR each time. Something about that race makes me want to perform well.

This year I’m going to have to swallow my pride and finish when I finish. It’s peak week of my Ironman training, and the Madison Mini will be an 18 mile training run for me. To get caught up in chasing a PR would be plain stupid, and to be honest not even physically possible at this time. It does make me cringe a little, remembering how confidently I went into the Mini last year knowing that I would crush my goal of breaking two hours, and this year…sigh.

So there’s my two seconds of whining about my slower pace. From this point on I’m going to choose to embrace my slower-than-last-year pace, and be grateful for it. I’m very lucky to be doing what I’m doing. I get to wake up early on Saturday morning to run 5 miles from my doorstep to the starting line of the Madison Mini. I get to soak in all the beauty that Madison has to offer while the sun rises. And then I get to run 13.1 miles with the running community that makes this a beautiful place.

There won’t be a PR, but there will be 2 race medals, a beer, and friends at the finish. There isn’t anything more that I could ask for.
